A Glimpse of Kieran's El Niño Winter

by Steve Ramsthaler March 29, 2016

Carlsbad native Kieran Anderson has been having a winter that he will never forget! But it isn’t just luck for this frothing wave hunter. He has been traveling from Southern California to the colder waters of Northern California, out to Hawaii, and south of the border to Baja in order to put himself in front of some of the biggest swells El Niño has offered up and put it all on the line.

“Best session of this years El Niño was at Mavericks in February. It was mental!”

Also in February, Kieran found himself in Hawaii and on this particular shot a spot he would have rather not been. Kieran can be seen here center with the yellow gun. “…went to Makaha and it was the biggest they had ever seen it! Took a bomb on the head that held me down so long the next one got me too. Some guys leash rapped around my ankle so I had to pull my vest. Stoked on that story haha…”

Kieran pulls into one that was offered up on a trip north during one of the bigger El Niño swells.

Over the past month Kieran has been making the journey down south to score at a few of the many point breaks that Baja has to offer. He has been surfing a very diverse quiver of boards from playful 5’4”s to 10’ guns. He just ordered a 9’6” from Bill Johnson with the hopes that he’ll get to test it out at Todos or somewhere north before the El Niño window passes.

XTERRA Surf is stoked to support Kieran! Our suits have provided him with incredible flexibility, warmth and durability; all things that can not be compromised when pushing yourself to the limit.

There is a pretty good chance Ari Engel, a 14-year old surfer from La Jolla California, surfs way more than you. In 2017, Ari surfed 509 times. That’s at least one, two, sometimes three times a day.

Surfing in a Blizzard
Surfing in a Blizzard

by Steve Ramsthaler January 23, 2018

We headed north up the frigid coast until we found a peeling left coming off a pier. Sean suited up and I went out to the snow-covered pier to shoot. Although it was challenging conditions to shoot in trying to keep the subject in focus during the blizzard, and not knowing if my toes were going to fall off, it was truly a moment us surfers and surf photographers live for.
