Rincon has definitely earned its stripes as the “Queen” of the California coast. Every winter, surfers of all ages, shapes, and board preference make the pilgrimage to San Barbara to pay tribute. Unfortunately for most, this tribute is usually in the form of sharing waves with all your newest acquaintances. But a lucky few are able to call this Southern California iconic wave home. Kilian Garland is one of the fortunate few.

On my last trip North, I happened to catch a glimpse of a session of his. The session was short, sweet, and undeniably effortless. I had grown up watching Kilian in events and the occasional surf flick, but never was I able to witness him in his element. And may I say, it is quite the spectacle. Style and grace is an understatement. Watch the video above to get a quick taste of Kilian at his beloved Rincon.

Surfing in a Blizzard
Surfing in a Blizzard

We headed north up the frigid coast until we found a peeling left coming off a pier. Sean suited up and I went out to the snow-covered pier to shoot. Although it was challenging conditions to shoot in trying to keep the subject in focus during the blizzard, and not knowing if my toes were going to fall off, it was truly a moment us surfers and surf photographers live for.
