A Day in the Bay - Episode 1: XTERRA Surf / SOLID Surf Co.

Featured Shaper: Dan O’Hara / SOLID Surf Co.

When we decided to create a collaboration surfboard with a local San Diego shaper, our first choice was working with Dan O’Hara at SOLID Surf out of Ocean Beach. Dan who has been shaping for over 15 years, started in his parents’ garage in New York. He eventually left the garage behind and moved SOLID out to sunny San Diego, where Dan fully immersed himself in yoga, meditation and west coast surfing.

Dan, who is always looking to improve the surfboard shaping process, liked up with Jeff Martin from Yulex, to come up with a less harmful, eco-friendlier, approach to producing surfboards. Incorporating these sustainable surfboard materials is not only less impact on the environment, but less impact to the people working on them.

SOLID Surf is currently using a 40% plant based Epoxy Resin that is 1000% less toxic than the standard polyester resin. Each board blank is made up of expanded polystyrene foam that can be recycled infinitely. Dan plans to incorporate 20% of recycled bi-product into his blanks, coming out on the market next year.

While many surfers aim to become more eco-conscious, we anticipate Dan O’Hara and SOLID Surf Co will be at the forefront of sustainable surfboard manufacturing worldwide.

Surfing in a Blizzard
Surfing in a Blizzard

by Steve Ramsthaler January 23, 2018

We headed north up the frigid coast until we found a peeling left coming off a pier. Sean suited up and I went out to the snow-covered pier to shoot. Although it was challenging conditions to shoot in trying to keep the subject in focus during the blizzard, and not knowing if my toes were going to fall off, it was truly a moment us surfers and surf photographers live for.
